There are many great things about Las Vegas and very few detracting factors, but to be fair, you have to admit that it is really, really hot there in the summer. But in Las Vegas, they know how to turn lemons into not just lemonade, but delicious and refreshing margaritas, and they serve them poolside at the Hard Rock Hotel.

The scene at the Hard Rock pool is one of the, uh, hotspots in the 702 during the summer, and it is hopping every day of the week. But, the hotel offers a poolside concert series each year that really sweetens the pot, and this year’s lineup looks incredible. Here are some of the performers who will be gracing the stage throughout the course of the poolside concert series at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas this summer:

Flyleaf — May 7th

Toots and the Maytals — May 14th

De La Soul — May 21st

Rusted Root — May 28th

Gin Blossoms — June 4th

Pepper — June 11th

The Original Wailers — June 18th

Los Lonely Boys — August 13th

And Many More!

The Sahara Hotel & Casino is one of the crown jewels of the Las Vegas Strip, and it is truly one of the most venerable landmarks in this exciting and unique oasis in the desert. Some would say that the Sahara is one of the older properties on Las Vegas Boulevard, and it has been around a long time so it may not be the best place to stay. However, it has been consistently upgraded and offers everything that one could want in a casino hotel, and the best part about the Sahara is the value–it is a first class resort, but it is priced just a tad lower than the self-touted newer properties.

The Sahara is running a number of specials right now, and one of them is their Hawaiian Airline Package where they are rewarding guest with two frequent flier miles for every one dollar spent on accommodations. That is hard to beat, and the three-night packages start at just $280. Visit the Sahara site to learn more about their incredible low cost vacation packages.

When you are traveling a distance by car with a pet, it can be challenging to find lodging that is friendly to our furry friends. Many of us have driven a long distance on a given day and found the town where we wanted to lay our heads for the night, only to wind up going into the office of one hotel after another and seeing that dreaded sign: no pets. That is a horrible feeling, but there are ways to make sure that you never run into this problem again.

One of the things that sticks in the craw of many travelers who like to bring their pets along is the absurdity of no pet policies in the first place. If you have been on the road all day with your trained, adult dog, and you simply want to rent a room for a few hours and get some sleep, what is the dog going to do? If I’m a hotel owner, and I see a group of four college kids on spring break with an ice chest half the size of Texas, I would be a lot more concerned about my room than I’d be when a couple who are in their sixties approach the desk with their ten year old poodle in tow. Young children are also in many instances far more prone to accidents, or writing on the wall with crayons, than are adult Border collies or Jack Russell Terriers.

But I digress. The best way to be sure that you have a pet-friendly hotel room waiting for you when you are traveling is to be sure to plan ahead. Many of us like to have an open ended itinerary that allows for some flexibility concerning where we may stop for the night depending on how we feel as the day is winding down, and that is understandable. But when you are traveling with a pet, you really don’t have this luxury. Map out your route beforehand, decide where you will be staying at the end of each day, and use the Internet to make reservations at pet friendly hotels that suit your budget.

There was once a time when the best way to find a hotel of motel when you were traveling was to become a member of an automobile club, buy a guide book, or just look by the side of the road when you got tired. All of these methods still work today of course, but with the advent of the Internet, it is much easier and more efficient to identify the lodging that is right for you and your family (if you happen to have them along with you) by using online resources.

Many of us invariably have specific needs that need to be met when we are traveling, and when you go online and read all of the details about the potential places to stay you can be certain that the hotel that you choose offers the features and amenities that are important to you. You may be traveling on business and in need of a hotel that has an iron and ironing board; perhaps you are traveling with a pet or pets and you require a pet friendly location; or you may have the kids along and feel as though you would like to treat them with a visit to the pool when you arrive at the hotel. Whatever your needs may be, you can find out everything that you need to know on the web before you make reservations.

The online travel reservation sites Expedia and Travelocity are good resources, and the fact that they are always negotiating the best prices helps you get the best value. Plus, they provide reviews from fellow travelers, and there is no better way to get a feel for the quality of hotel than through word of mouth. So make your plans, do your homework, find the hotel that is right for you, and take advantage of your free time to the fullest by taking a vacation!

Many of have considered the fact that each night there must be tens of thousands of empty motel rooms all over the world, and there are also thousands who have nowhere to sleep. I know that motels need to make a profit to survive, but it does seem like a horrible waste, and it is actually kind of weird. Imagine someone sleeping in their car across the street from a motel that has two of their fifty rooms occupied…it seems like the motel would be better off lowering the price and at least wind up getting something for the room rather than nothing.

Touring musicians have certainly had this thought more than once, and Motel 6 is participating in an interesting partnership that is good for musicians, and good for their business. They are offering free rooms to some touring musicians in return for mere goodwill. They figure that the band members will say nice things about them publicly and via social networking online and that this type of word-of-mouth, grass roots buzz will help their business in the long run.

This deal is not a universal policy that applies to all musicians (darn!). It is a deal that was worked out between Motel 6 and a couple of music biz entities who arranged for this hook-up for three somewhat fledgling bands. Though this partnership is helping just a handful of artists at present, it is a step in the right direction, and it makes a lot of sense. When you do nice things for people, they say nice things about you and do what they can to help you in return. Hey, maybe our government should try that, because killing folks in faraway lands doesn’t look like it’s working as a public relations tool.

Barack Obama was recently involved in some controversy when he came out once again against Americans who enjoy visiting that exciting gaming destination in the desert, fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada. The state of Nevada usually votes Republican in presidential elections, but voters in the state broke with those trends in 2008, and Obama captured its five electoral votes in this past election. Politicians usually show some appreciation to the people who helped them get elected, but Obama apparently couldn’t care less about the economy of the Silver State, and he is doing all that he can to damage it and put more Nevadans out of work.

When Obama says things like “You don’t blow a bunch of cash in Vegas when you’re trying to save for college,” and “You can’t get corporate jets…you can’t go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayer’s dime,” he is taking food out of the mouths of Las Vegas (and Miami) hotel workers. The hospitality industry is Las Vegas, and a huge percentage of Nevadans rely on it for their survival. When times are hard in depressed areas around the country, many folks move to Nevada to try to find some work, and the Las Vegas hospitality industry has been a lifesaver for tens of thousands of displaced workers over the last couple of decades.

Obama is not only ungrateful and insensitive, he is also a hypocrite. When he turns up in Hawaii, another resort destination that relies on tourism for its economic survival, how does he get there? Operating Air Force One costs about $67,000 per flight hour. So when Obama and family head to Hawaii for the holidays, they are spending enough of our tax dollars on the flights alone to give 20 or more Americans $30,000 a year jobs.

Mr. Obama, the city of Las Vegas is not the problem that is making it hard for Americans to make ends meet…you, sir, and your ilk, are the problem.

Luxury-hotel chains, the biggest losers in the lodging industry’s decline, are giving up some of their hard-won stars to save money. Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc., the U.S. owner of luxury brands including St. Regis and W Hotels, will let some of its properties reduce their level of service — and number of stars — until the industry begins to recover, spokeswoman K.C. Kavanagh said. Hilton Hotels Corp. and InterContinental Hotels Group Plc have already cut the ratings for some locations.

‘Maintaining stars requires enormous capital investment,’ said Stephen Bollenbach, who retired as Hilton’s chief executive officer when Blackstone Group LP bought the company in 2007. ‘Ratings aren’t based on making good returns on your investment.’

Luxury-hotel operators have struggled to attract customers as the recession deters vacationers and forces companies to slash their travel budgets. That should mean lower rates for high-end business and vacation travelers. It may also mean the loss of some amenities, such as welcome gifts, flowers in your room, complimentary newspapers or 24-hour room service.

Hotel operators need to reduce services to conserve cash. Occupancy rates for luxury hotels worldwide fell to 57 percent in the year through July from 71 percent in the same period a year earlier, a bigger drop than for other types of accommodation, according to Smith Travel Research.
