Stewed Escargots with Wild Mushrooms

If you find yourself taking a trip to France, you will invariably have the opportunity to sample some dishes with are made with the French delicacy known as escargot, or snails, which are an intrinsic element of French cuisine. Although this is an acquired taste for many, trying out the fare of the region that you are visiting is one of the most interesting aspects of traveling. Should you find that a trip to France is not on your immediate itinerary (like most of us American working stiffs), you may want to bring a taste of France to your own dining room. So that you can see what escargot is all about, here is a delicious stewed escargot dish with mushrooms that you can easily prepare at home.

Ingredients:

24-30 pieces small rinsed and drained snails

125 grams wild mushrooms, diced

2 tablespoons butter

1 minced shallot

½ garlic clove, finely minced

1 small peeled, seeded, and diced tomato

50 milliliters of heavy cream

Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

1. Heat a small frying pan over medium-low heat and melt the butter. Once butter is melted, add in the shallot and cook until it softens.

2. Put in garlic and mushrooms and cook until the mushrooms are soft.

3. Mix in the tomatoes and snails and add the cream. Continue cooking until the cream becomes thick. Add a dash of salt and pepper and serve. Makes two servings.
