Weekend road trips
When you work hard for a living throughout the week like most of us, you tend to put some hand-to-mouth chores on the back burner and plan to take care of them over the weekend. This is natural, and it is a fact of life that we all have to deal with. However, everyone needs to have some fun and enjoy something different every now and then, and that is what vacations are for.
The problem is that these days a lot of us can’t afford to spend money on a lavish, lengthy week or two week long vacations, and with the advent of globalization and outsourcing, many jobs aren’t even offering that time off. Why? Because they don’t have to. Many Americans are now given work weeks that are just short of 40 hours so that the global corporations that they work for don’t have to provide them with full benefits. And how about the “temp” craze? When there is work to be done here in America, companies now hire “temps” so that they don’t have to give them benefits like vacations and health insurance. For the record, we are also not afforded the security and dignity of a real job when we are hired as “temps,” and that can be stressful and soul-sucking.
It’s good to bring these realities out into the open, and they do present enormous challenges. But we have to do what we can to enjoy our lives, and getting out of town and out of your ordinary routine is good for your head. One way to do this on a budget is to take weekend road trips. Regardless of where you live, there are a number of destinations that are just a couple to a few hours away that provide you with a chance have some fun and rejuvenate your spirits.
If you enjoy the outdoors, there are many things that you can do for free (or very close to it), like hiking, fishing, going to the beach, or just having a picnic in a beautiful natural setting like a state park. If you are a sports fan, take in a game in a nearby town, or if you love live music, go to a concert in a city a couple of hours away and enjoy yourself.
Getting into a rut can decrease your quality of life, and a good way to avoid that is to get out of town over the weekend and to something that you enjoy. It doesn’t need to cost a lot, and when you regularly make road trip plans you get to enjoy the trips themselves and always have something to look forward to between them.
