Will Favre return?
It would seen like the talk concerning whether or not Brett Favre will be returning to the Minnesota Vikings for the 2010 NFL season will begin in earnest around now, and why not? This drama seems to have become an annual event that football fans can look forward to each and every year once the Super Bowl has been played. Favre has taken a lot of heat for his repeated retirements and subsequent un-retirements, but there are those who look at it another way.
When you have been doing something all of your life, and you did it for years before you got paid for it because you simply loved doing it, it is going to very hard for you to give it up. My guess is that if it was just about the money, Brett Favre would have hung up his cleats a long time ago. It seems to me that the man simply loves the game and finds it hard to step away even when others around him are counseling him that it may be the right thing to do.
Not too many people are capable of playing quarterback in the NFL. Players that were incredible college superstars and top draft picks like Mathew Stafford, JaMarcus Russell, and Mark Sanchez sit at or near the bottom of the NFL quarterback rankings. But when you look at the stats for the 2009 season, who do you see at the top of the QBs statistically? Drew Brees had the top quarterback rating at 109.6, but the great Brett Favre was second at 107.2, ahead of Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Philip Rivers, and yes, ahead of Aaron Rodgers. Favre threw more touchdown passes then Sanchez, Russell, and Stafford combined.
It’s true that he made some crucial errors in the NFC Championship game. But then again…he played in the NFC Championship game. I for one would like to see the old geezer come back, because the man is still one of the very best football players on the planet and he makes every team that he joins better than they were before he arrived.
